In the summer especially, folk festivals and musical performances abound, giving an insight into local traditions. In each small area, or "pays" that you explore, you'll discover the unique customs and characteristics of that particular locale - resulting from its geographic position and historical experience. Each has its own regional cuisine, folk music, traditional costumes, and even "patois" or manner of speech distinctive to that region.
Janet has always been fascinated with European languages and cultures, perhaps because her great grandfather came from a small village in Normandy in France and her great grandmother came from a small village in the Black Forest in Germany, across the Rhine from Alsace.
Her early travels involved locating and visiting these areas.
Specializing in Modern Foreign Languages at Sweet Briar College, the Ecole Francaise of Middlebury College, Yale University and then l'Universite de Strasbourg, Janet has always pursued these interests...
- first as a teacher of French, Spanish and German, then as a travel agent, focusing primarily on Europe as a destination, and France in particular.
